It is with great sadness that the family of Samuel Louis Casteel announces his passing on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at the age of 62. Sam will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 41 years Mary Anne and his children Fallon Elaine and Madysn Glynn. Sam will also be fondly remembered by his two grandsons Tanner Steel (Cowboy) and Joshua Dean (Pinhead) and his granddog Kevin.
He is survived by his sister Lily Wood and husband Larry, brothers Roy Casteel and Junior Casteel and wife Connie, several nieces and nephews, and numerous family and friends who love him.
Sam is preceded in death by his father Rev. E.H. Casteel, mother Mary Casteel, and brothers Glen Casteel, Tom Casteel, and John Casteel.
A minister’s son, Sam grew up traveling to different places and attending many schools. Wrestling was his all-time favorite sport, and he competed for Stilwell High School. He graduated from Vian High School in 1973.
Sam began his career as a surveyor for the state of Oklahoma and was a dedicated employee for four years. For the next eleven years, Sam was employed at Kerr McGee and worked with the A Shift Crew. The A Shift Crew quickly became friends and formed a brotherhood that was everlasting. His hard work led to his promotion as supervisor. Finally, after leaving Kerr McGee, Sam joined Hearon Steel in Muskogee where he started flipping rebar. His exceptional work ethic led to a promotion as supervisor once again and then a move to sales. He was with the company for 25 years.
Sam never knew a lazy day nor an idle hand. That just wasn’t the cowboy way. Time spent at The Farm was his slice of Heaven on this earth. He could always be found hunting for the next Big Buck, fishing with his grandsons, playing with Kevin, building campfires with the guys, and checking on the horses and cows. The Farm was his home away from home where Sam and Bub were able to enjoy a way of life as close to Gus and Call as they could.
Family was of the utmost importance to Sam, and he took his role as provider seriously. His daughters were his world, and he was extremely proud of Punk and Sissy from day one. From playing ball with Fallon to dance recitals with Mady, Sam was his daughters’ biggest fan. He had a generous heart when it came to his girls and never asked his wife how much it cost.
Services for Sam will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at 2 pm at Blackgum Baptist Church with Bro. Dale Ritter presiding. Burial at Box Cemetery.
